Whitesplaining and Tone Policing

Whitesplaining is defined on Wiktionary as a "modern colloquialism that generally refers to the act of non-minority explaining something condescendingly to someone who is not white- especially regarding race relations or minority behaviour, presuming the listener's inferior understanding ".

John Blake simples whitesplaining a column here

He says "whitesplaining is an affection that's triggered when some white people hear a person of colour complain about racism. They will immediately explain in a condescending tone why the person is wrong, 'getting too emotional' or 'seeing race in everything'.

Maisha Z. Johnson about 'the ways well-intentioned people whitesplain racism and white they needs to stop' here, in this explaining how it dismisses Black views in favour of your own, when in reality you are likely ' less equipped ' to talk about the these topics.

The Root also explains more here

Whitesplaining enforces tone policing, the act of silencing a person's ideas and thoughts on the basis of their emotional tone and so therefore ignoring the content of their message. When someone questions anger or upset instead of addressing the issues raised, they are telling the marginalised that they have a responsibility to not show emotions that make majority groups feel uncomfortable. As Johnny Silvercloud says, ' White comfort doesn't trump Black lives'. Colour blindness, defensiveness and using Black token's or people in your argument against another Black individuals emotional argument is also incredibly harmful.

In conclusion, Jade Greer writes that 'whitesplaining perpetuates white privilege and ignorance, which fuels racism and only serves to erode the progress we society is beginning to make to fight racial inequality'.
